LONGARM QUILTING FAQ

WHAT TYPE OF QUILTING DO WE OFFER?

  • Computerized and Hand guided quilting: Prairie Quiltings uses a 2018 Nolting NV Longarm with Intelliquilter Computerized System. I may also provide hand guided quilting depending on the quilt.
  • Edge to Edge Quilting: This type of quilting is computer generated all over pattern that repeats across the entire quilt top.  Designs are chose to enhance or compliment your quilt pattern or fabric style.  See our available designs.
  • Custom or Semi-Custom Quilting: Quilting is specifically designed around your individual quilt. Typically, More than one design is utilized for blocks, borders and sashing.
  • Basting: Basting is done in long stitches over the entire quilt top, in rows 4-5 inches.  This allows the quilt top, batting and backing to be sandwiched together, for easier hand or home machine quilting.  The long stitches allow for easy removal once the quilting is complete.

DO I NEED TO PROVIDE MY OWN BATTING?

Yes you can provide your own batting.   Batting is a very important part of the quilt and now is not the time to scrimp on this.  Good quality is recommended.   I do have batting available as explained below.

  • QUILTERS DREAM BATTING available for purchase.
  • We keep Quilters Dream Select Cotton, Dream Blend 80/20, Dream Wool, and Dream Puff Poly in stock in precut packages for sale.
  • We can special order anything you want from Quilters Dream directly. If you would like a full list of the Quilters Dream offerings, please visit them at http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/user-guide/.

I can provide anything they offer but will need to be ordered so allow extra time, if not stocked.

If your backing is a very dark fabric and front can accommodate, please consider a black batting.  Long arm machines use bigger needles and even with sharp points, some “Pokies” or batting may show on the back as white dots along the stitching

WHAT TYPE OF THREAD DO YOU USE?

I use the Glide brand solid colors unless otherwise requested.

I stock various colors in each but can readily get any color but will need an extra 10 days to order, if not in stock.

  • Glide (Trilobal Polyester)-40 weight
  • Affinity (Variegated Polyester)-40 weight
  • Harmony-(Variegated long Staple Egyptian cotton)-40 weight
  • Cairo-Quilt Egyptian long staple cotton in solids) 50 weight

These are all Filtec brand threads.  Please call or mention if you wish to use a different thread other than Glide.

DO YOU OFFER BINDING SERVICES?

  • Yes, we offer several levels of binding services. These are available on our pricing section for details and options.

CAN I DELIVER OR MAIL MY QUILT TO YOU?

Local Customers– You can drop off and/or pick up your quilt by appointment at my Studio in Earlville, IL or other arrangements can be made.

  • Mail in Customers-Yes! Call, text or email us and we can guide you through the process of where & how to send your quilt.
  • When shipping it is suggested to wrap your quilt etc in a plastic bag before placing in box. This will help provide your quilt extra protection in case the box is damaged. Also, please include your name, address, and copy of order form within the plastic, so that we know who this belongs to.
  • Prairie Quiltings is not responsible for any packages that are lost or damaged or stolen packages during shipment. If there is damage, I will promptly notify you.
  • Postage is responsibility of the client. See pricing for further info.

SHOULD I ADD MY EMBELLISHEMENTS BEFORE IT’S QUILTED?

  • It is recommended to add embellishments after it is quilted to prevent damage or loss.  In rare occasions, we can sometimes “Mask” and stitch around the embellishments. There is an additional charge of $7.00 per mask for this service.

PREPARING YOUR QUILT FOR THE LONGARM

SHOULD I SANDWICH MY QUILT BEFORE SENDING?

  • We ask that you bring us your quilt as a separate top, back and batting.

SHOULD I PRESS MY QUILT TOP AND BACKING?

  • All seams should be pressed as flat as possible. Be careful with seams that are bulky. I cannot quilt over extremely bulky seams without causing problems. Trim all dog ears too.
  • When pressing, CHECK FOR OPEN SEAMS, if there are open seams and all seams are tightly stitched together. This is crucial, as the long arm machine can’t detect open seams and may get caught in them and do damage to the fabric.
  • Take your time in this and fold carefully when done. Seams need to be flat and straight.

DO I NEED TO TRIM LOOSE THREADS ON FRONT AND BACK?

  • YES!!! Threads or foreign debris such as pet hair that have not been trimmed/removed on the back of the quilt, can be stitched into the quilt and cause lumps to form. Secondly, a single thread of a dark color can show through a light background and distract from your work.

SHOULD I STAY STITCH MY TOP?

  • Stay stitching seams are recommended. Seams that are not secured come apart on the long arm machine. When you stay-stitch around the perimeter of your quilt, you keep the seams together.Quilt Tops with borders do not need this.

PREPARING THE TOP

  • SAFETY PIN a paper notes with top of quilt. Also safety pin a note with any areas that need special needs or instruction.  No other pins should be used.
  • Please provide WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS of any special requirements.

Please check to make sure that there is minimal ‘fullness’ in your borders and your quilt is as square as possible. In extreme cases, when your quilt is not square or flat it can lead to wrinkles, folds, or waves in your quilting.

Fullness Disclaimer

Fullness and/or puckers within the quilt top cannot be quilted out. We cannot guarantee that puckers
and tucks won’t be sewn in. In some cases excessive fullness in borders may result in quilt top corners
not being square. The flatter your quilt top is, the better the finished quilt will be.

PREPARING YOUR BACKING FABRIC

  • Backing and Batting needs to be 8″ longer and 8″ wider than your quilt top (4″ all around).
    Example a 70″ x 80″ top needs a backing that is 78″ x 88″.
The additional length is to attach the backing to the quilting machine frame. The additional width is so we can use side clamps to keep the backing taut, which help prevent puckers on the back and helps with an overall better quilting job.
  • Backing should have straight cut edges as best as you can.  (We understand most quilters may not have adequate space to lay out a larger quilt)
  • You may also tear the 4 sides (Only on Wide Back fabrics) to make them straight but this does require extra fabric.
  • If seaming your backing, it is best if the seam is horizontal and press the backing seam open.
  • Use a ½” seam for the back seams. FABRIC SELVAGES SHOULD BE TRIMMED OFF PRIOR TO PIECING BACKS.  This will cause the seams not to lay flat and cause puckering when washed.
  • Minky, Fleece, and cuddle backing work fine, however be aware that we put tension on the backing when it is on the machine which may cause any printed pattern on the backing to slightly lose its shape.

If you have borders on the back or something you want centered on the back, we will do our best.   As we quilt, the quilt top shrinks a little from the stitching, so it will be close, but we cannot guarantee your backing will be perfectly centered.
